Icy
It’s really cold here.
The temps haven’t even reached 0 today. Not my idea of fun… But one good thing might come of it.
For some reason unbeknownst to me, I have been dying for icee/slushy drinks the last few weeks. I’m craving stuff that’s cold and icy. The idea of a lemonade slushee sounds amazing to me, but the only place I know to get them is a nearby town’s Little League concession stand — which, of course, is not open in January.
So, I’m wondering… think I can go find a clean batch of snow and pour in some lemonade? Or make some lemonade and put it outside for awhile? Hmmm….

just make sure the only yellow snow you’re using is from lemons…

Hey Christa, your kids might get a kick out of this (or maybe they’ve seen it before) This morning Cam (our youngest) demonstrated this for me. He put a pan of water on the stove and brought it to a boil. Then he took it outside and threw the water into the air. It immediatly turned to “snow”.
Well, I thought it was cool and would make a pretty interesting “science” conversation.
As you can tell, it doesn’t take much to impress me!

I’ll come make some for ya! You can put your feet up and I’ll pamper you.;) Goodness, I wish it were that easy. Anyway, I say freeze up some lemonade in an ice cube tray and then when it’s frozen stick it in a blender with a little more lemonade. See how it turns out. I have never tried it before. Let me know if you try something and how it turns out. Now you have be drooling.

Heather, I AM drooling! That sounds so good. I’m going to have to get some of the “real” lemonade concentrate from Aldi’s. (It has the pulp in it and is super sour!) Yum… Can’t wait.
Debbie, We are going to try this tomorrow. I think the kids will love it. I suppose, though, that this means I’ll have to bundle up and be the one to go outside. Yuck. I’ll let them watch from the giant picture window. Otherwise, it takes longer to bundle them all up than it would take to do the experiment!
I’ll let you know how it goes. I may even try pictues.

Bob saw that on the news this afternoon but I had turned my head and missed it. Not intrested in “experimenting” at my age. LOL

It’s a really good example of “sublimation.” Moisture exists in three states: Water (liquid), Ice (solid) and Steam (vapor). Solid to liquid is melting, liquid to vapor is evaporation. Vapor to liquid is condensation and liquid to solid is freezing. Sublimation is when it “skips” a step such as solid to vapor (dry ice “smoke”) or vapor to solid (snow). The heated water is thrown into the air to create smaller particles which evaporate at a much faster rate. Due to the temperature of the air and the dewpoint well below freezing, the moisture falls out of the air and instantly freezes as a vapor and turns to snow!

Nate Schrock, sceince guy doesn’t have the same ring but I was impressed.
