Simple Pleasures
Few things in life give me greater pleasure than clean sheets. I just love the crisp feeling of sliding into them when they still smell very faintly of fabric softener and the kids haven’t had a chance to smash Pop-Tarts onto them.
My handsome Nate finds it slightly amusing that I get giddy about clean sheets every single time, but he does understand the thrill (or he at least pretends to.)
There are lots of other “simple pleasures” like this for me…
- The smell of lilac bushes each spring
- Finding an up-close parking spot in the dead of winter
- Getting a real, hand-written letter in the mail
- Finding unexpected money in the pocket of a pair of jeans
- Receiving a “bouquet” of dandelions from a child
- Watching a baseball game live
- Hearing of one’s salvation
- Holding a newborn baby
- Having a child fall asleep in your arms
- Catching up on ALL the laundry
There’s one more for me that even tops the clean sheets ordeal. It’s unique to our family in some ways:
- Spending an entire Sunday with Nate
See, with Nate’s wacky police schedule, he often has to work a shift on Sundays. There’s no way around this; we just can’t convince the criminals to take the day off. Every other day of the week is filled with his aforementioned wacky police schedule PLUS his wacky flight schedule filled with helicopter flight students. (He doesn’t schedule students for Sundays.)
So, it’s very rare for him to get an entire day off… AND THIS WEEKEND HE HAD TWO!!!
It just so happened that this weekend his day off fell on Sunday! (YES!) and Saturday was a day off from the police department. Plus the weather was too bad to fly.
:)
So, I accepted it when he left us all here this morning and headed to the airport. We’re still on cloud nine from two whole days with Daddy. Simple (yet complicated) pleasure.
What are your simple pleasures?

I am so glad! I know it can be hard. I can’t identify, but I pray for you often.
Clean sheets are at the top of my list, too. That and cupboards full of shiny dishes.

Ooh… Or just full cupboards! (of food I mean)

I, too, love clean sheets.
I also love it when Danny (my 5 y.o.) comes up for no reason and says, “Mom, I just love you!” and gives me a big mushy, wet kiss!
However, I have no clue what it is like to have all the laundry done!!

Jamie, having the laundry all caught up only happens, maybe, twice a year around here. That’s what it ranks on the list! I have a little lover-boy, too. My Connor says, “Mommy, I love you so much!” Then he proceeds to kiss me all over my face. I love that!

I, too, love clean sheets! My favorite part is that they are all nice and flat and where they are supposed to be. It always makes me a little sad when I’m not the first one to get in bed after it’s made… like if Matt takes a nap in the afternoon… because then everything is already messed up and I missed out on the joy of crawling into the freshly made bed. I guess that means that I just need to take a nap after making the bed each time right? Who knows, I might end up washing the sheets every day if it meant I could take a nap. =)
