Sub-Zero, Sub-Par Hunting
My husband spent a lot of time outside (in the bitter cold) hunting recently. He eventually got a deer. We’re thankful for the money that accomplishment will save us on groceries!
(As a side note, I grew up thinking anything besides beef, chicken and turkey was gross!! Not so… Venison has a great flavor when prepared properly and is leaner than beef. So good!)
Anyway, my boys are all gung-ho hunting now. This is, in part. fueled by the promise to one day get to go with Daddy… and by the fact that there are hunting shows on TV. So, the “men” in our house sit around shouting things at the TV like, “Check out the size of that deer!! WOAH!” and “Take the shot!! Take it now.” It’s all a bit surreal for a suburban city girl like me. Such was the case last night.
This morning, I’ve been trying to catch up on a bit of housework before we start school. The boys have taken this opportunity to hunt. *cough*
They each have long (toy) guns out, backpacks on and whatever pieces of random camouflage clothing they can find. They’re crouching behind the couch, guns pointed over the back, aiming at things in the (still present) Christmas tree. Then they’re making remarks like, “I got a 50-pound deer!” and “I just shot a 100-pound black bear!”
I tried explaining to them more appropriate weights.
But as I came downstairs to check the laundry, I heard Andy say, “I got a 68-pound deer!! Woo-Hooo!!” And Brady seemed thrilled for him.
At least they’re supportive of one another’s low standards. ![]()
