Go Team!
Awhile back, I wrote about my endless quest to name our newly established homeschool. It’s not required in our state to name our school, but I’m just strange like that.
The graphic artist in me wants a logo for everything… and what’s a school logo without a mascot? Had to have both!
I really longed for the Conquering Camels — because what’s more fitting for a house full of kids than someone who spits out of defense?! — but my husband said no. (He’s usually fun, but not this time.
) I wanted something that captured the essence of our home. I tried a million ideas… Quiver Christian School, home of the Arrows? Nah… Faith Baptist School, home of the Eagles? No… Way overdone. There were a lot of other decent ideas, but my brain is cluttered right now and so is my desk, so I can’t find that scrap piece of paper on which I jotted my ideas. I’m sure you’ll be fine.
After much debate over the perfect words to fill the acronym, we came up with this:
Please keep in mind that the above logo is a work-in-progress. It’s a bit too busy for my taste, but somehow I seem to be a bit too busy to work on it extensively. Ironic, isn’t it?
There are a few reasons we settled on this name:
- We wanted something that incorporated our emphasis on both home/family AND the Bible/faith. We chose FLIGHT as an acronym for “Faith Learned in Godly Home Teaching.” Nate — being the pilot that he is — loved the nod to aviation, too. We can’t seem to get away from it.
- We chose the “Pilots” as our mascot because it fit so well with our name, plus Nate would love it if all our kids learned to fly. I would love it learned to fly, but in another sense. You know, that mom-who-wants-her-kids-to-seek-God-and-soar-in-every-aspect-of-life kind of fly.
- The image for the Pilots had to be a helicopter because that’s all our boys talk about. After all, Daddy is their hero.
- Another part of being the graphic design nerd that I am is the tagline. When I went to yearbook camp in high school, (See? I am a nerd!) we learned the importance of themes. Ours is “Always Upward.” Since helicopters can take off vertically (without the aid of a runway,) this was fitting. More importantly, we wanted to stress to our kids the importance of continually turning to God… Always upward!
- Also, as a fun side note, we can call our school “Flight Prep” for short. In the aviation world, flight prep is the routine check the pilot does of the aircraft before taking off. Seemed fitting here, too. Also, our pre-schooler Brady is currently in “pre-flight,” another nod to the life of a pilot. Again, my husband is so pleased. My kids think they’re cool.
- Before you all rush out to buy merchandise, you should know that the school colors are not just plain ol’ light blue and grey, though to the naked eye it might seem to be. Nope… For the sake of alliteration and our cheerleaders (you know… the ones who throw Goldfish crackers from their highchairs,) those colors are silver and sky. (”Go, Pilots, Go… Go Silver and Sky! Go, Pilots, Go! Fly way, way up high! Goooo Team!!”) Got it?
So, there you have it! Like much of my life, it’s way overthought. Fun, nonetheless. The kids now want shirts made.
I’ll add that to my list of things to do. It’s right behind “Talk to principal about hiring a janitor.”

I love everything about this! I think your name and logo is a perfect fit for your family. You thought of all the important aspects of your school and incorporated them into one flawlessly. I’m quite impressed =) Of course, I attended a public elementary school where the mascot was a bumble bee-ahem…
Thanks for stopping by my blog to check on me. I’ve been pretty wrapped up in the events of life. I have no idea how amazing women like you find time to blog regularly, run a business, and care so lovingly for your families. You all make me tired just reading about your lives!
Blessings~
