Birthday and a Birth

We had a busy weekend! Most of the time we’re busy, but this was a bit different.

Saturday, we traveled home from our trip away. Nate had to take his police squad car, so I was driving the two hour trip in our giant van with five kids. I should explain now that Brady sits two seats behind the driver’s seat. You’ll need to know that. ;)

We passed a cemetery during our drive and the boys wanted to know more. We had a long conversation about what they’re for and what caskets are and why you don’t need to breathe when you’re dead. Brady and Andy were particularly interested in all of this stuff. They seemed to be somewhat pacified, but then Brady piped up from the (middle) backseat and said, “Mommy, when are you going to let me get saved?!”

Andy accepted Jesus as his Savior in mid-August and Brady has shown an interest ever since. I kept countering his interest with questions and patience because I wanted to be sure Brady wasn’t just “riding the big brother wave,” so to speak. But when Brady piped up with the question like that, I felt terrible. What kind of bad mommy won’t let their son pray such a simple, precious prayer?!

Shouting back in the van with my eyes on the road, I again made sure Brady understood just who Jesus is and what He’d done for my precious boy. He knew he was a sinner. He knew Jesus died on the cross for his sins. He knew Jesus rose again the third day. He knew he just need to pray and “ask Jesus to come into my heart.”

And he did it. Right there in our 12-passenger van, on Route 2 in Indiana!

He immediately wanted to call Daddy, whose car was right in front of us. Nate was thrilled, of course! Andy wanted to talk to Daddy, too. He said, “Dad, Brady got saved but I still don’t think he can have the bread and juice [communion] at church because it might have dairy in it.” :D

Four-and-a-half year old Brady swimming at the hotel pool last week.

In other news, our sweet, sweet Connor turned three yesterday! He was such a good two-year old, we’re hoping his threes aren’t terrible. ;)

In all the chaos of returing home from a week away and spending part of the day at church, we kept it all a bit low-key at home. I think it was fine with him because any time we asked what he wanted for his birthday, he’d say either “a number three candle” or “cloclate cake.”

We gave him both… and some other gifts, too.

After church we went out to dinner with a bunch of friends and the waitress asked if they could sing for the birthday boy. They broughit him a huge ice cream sundae and announced to the (nearly empty) restaurant that “Connor is celebrating his third birthday!”

Then they sang while he sat perfectly still looking out of the corner of his eyes. It was as if he was thinking, “If I don’t look at them, they’ll go away.” We’re sure he didn’t know what to make of all the attention from strangers.

Sweet and snuggly Connor “Bo” flexes his muscles.

So, now we have back-to-back birthdays in our house. Brady’s spiritual birthday is October 4th and Connor’s birthday is October 5th. We’re so blessed!

Happy Birthday, Bo. Nana and Poppy love you very much! Even if you can only sing the Birthday song once.

Brady once again Nana and Poppy are so very proud of you for making such a big boy decision, many big boys don’t know the wonderful story that you and your brothers and sisters know.

Praise God for all of you.
