WFMW: Cheaper kitchen gadget

Here’s another pathetic attempt to give you a great idea for Works-for-Me Wednesday.

I’ve needed a wide-mouth funnel for quite some time. I priced one in a fancy kitchen gadget and, though it was stainless steel, it was $25! Personally, I think that’s a bit outrageous for what it is.

Recently, I was at a local big box store and found this:

It’s actually a radiator funnel from the automotive department!

The best part? It was all of about 97 cents!

It works great for transferring the contents of those enormous gallons (I’m sort of kidding) of jelly. ketchup or Miracle Whip to the more managable-for-little hands type squeeze bottles.

So, this tip may not have rocked your world, but it may save you $24.03. That works for me!

PS– While I have you… Does anyone have a good recipe for homemade baked soft pretzels? You know, like the ones from the mall? I’ve tried three different recipes so far and each of them is not quite perfect. Anyone have a recipe that’s tried and true? Thanks!

i need a funnel for the unity sand at my wedding - i sure hope i don’t have to pay $25 - but i’m not sure bright yellow will work either!

Good find. I would never think of that. Sometimes being creative saves so much money. For the pretzels, try this one: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Mall-Pretzels/Detail.aspx I have made them a couple times, and they are gone very quickly. THe best is with the cinnamon! Hope that helps.

Wow, what a great idea! Isn’t it funny what you can find in the oddest places?
Now, Pretzels: visit “Kelley” over at intricatebalance.blogspot.com and check out her pretzel recipe. I’ve made it and it’s delicious! (I’ve done it with butter rather than an egg wash, which makes it more like a salty roll. I plan to try the egg wash trick next time!)

I don’t have a pretzel recipe, but I’ll tell you what I use for a funnel…The top part of a 2 liter Coke bottle! Ha ha, it works. I just cut around, fix jagged edges, presto! FUNNEL. Cheap, functional.

I hope you found your recipe, I do have one, but it may be boxed up in the garage. They are fun to make, but a bit time consuming. So yummy out of the oven though. I will look for it even if you have found one, because now I want to make some too!.
