Favorite food for a five-year-old

When your Mom is chronically pregnant, much of your world revolves (sadly) around food. This is what I mean:

For birthdays around here, I like to make each person’s favorite meal (if possible). Andy’s birthday was last week, so I made chicken-and-noodles, mashed potatoes and kale greens (YES, kale greens… we’re weird. We love any kind of greens). He was thrilled!

While I was making his special dinner, Nana called to wish him a great day. During their conversation, he told her what I was making. She asked him if that was his favorite food. This was his answer:

“Um, I guess. I like it a lot. Really, my favorite food is actually The Essenhaus, but Mommy said we can’t go there because it’s far away.”

Please note that it’s pronounced like ”S.N. House,” but it’s full official name is Das Dutchman Essenhaus.

Yes, my son is five and his favorite place in the world to eat is a restuarant exactly 100 miles from our house. It’s a huge, super-yummy family-style Amish place. We get to eat there about twice a year when my husband serves as an instructor for Honor Guard Camp.

We haven’t eaten there since September. Yet, the food is remembered fondly by my little boy. (They serve more than 29 varieties of pie, plus other desserts. Who can blame him?!) He often asks if we can go there when he’s given a choice. Poor kid lives too far away for a quick commute. Maybe he’ll live in that area when he’s older, just for the good food.
