A few years ago, when Andy had just turned three and Brady was not quite two, I actually had a good idea. Since it was Christmastime and the boys were also learning their shapes, I got smart and labeled their gifts like this:
I knew that Andy, being older, would assume ALL the presents were for him unless immediately told otherwise. Instead of trying to keep all the gifts, these tags helped him to understand that some were for his little brother, too. He actually enjoyed sorting and sharing with Brady this way!
When Connor came along, he was assigned a triangle. Evan now gets a daisy-shaped flower. The older kids are old enough to read their own names now, but I still label gifts this way to alleviate confusion for the younger kids. I even use their shapes to label toys, hats, and more!
Anyone else out there have similar ideas? I love hearing tips for making life with lots of little ones easier. For other ideas, check out Works for Me Wednesday at Rocks in My Dryer.

That is the best idea I’ve heard in a long time! Thank you for sharing it!
What a great idea! I will definitely be borrowing this one.
I really like the idea of using shapes rather than names to label things like hats, gloves, etc. It’s a good plan NOT to put your child’s name out where folks who have no business knowing it, can find it. Great idea.
My baby is only 8 months old (first Christmas!) so I hadn’t even considered this issue yet. This would be a great way to teach shapes and eliminate confusion for young children that don’t recognize their own name yet. I’ll be using your tip in years to come. Thanks!
What a novel idea. My kids are grown, but my grandchildren are not. I am going to do it this Xmas for them.
what an excellent idea. i love that this would work for labelling everything not just gifts. my mom used to wrap all the gifts in different paper and make a “key” to whose paper was whose. this works if you can collect lots of kinds of paper!
What a great idea!
We used colours.
