Morning Sickness Rears its Ugly Head

Sep-18-2007 By christa

With Andy, Brady and Connor’s pregnancies, I was very sick. Morning sickness lasted all day. Every day. With Andy, I got sick while I was in labor. Fun stuff!

I’ve tried every trick in the book. And still, I’ve thrown up (sorry!) in more places than anyone else I know… including the median between the parking lot of a busy restaurant and the highway…. Also, out the door of my husband’s squad car in more than one grocery store parking lot. My husband says I should write a book about the best places to throw up and the foods that taste almost as good the second time. I’m not trying to be disgusting (I don’t have to try — it comes naturally), I’m just stating that morning sickness comes hand-in-hand with pregnancy for me.

When I was pregnant with our fourth child, Baby D, I never got sick. Deep inside, I knew something was wrong. I ended up miscarrying this precious child at 12 weeks. While we were distraught over never getting to know our baby, we were soon blessed by another pregnancy. When I started getting sick again while pregnant with Evan, I knew everything would be fine.

Odd as it is, I now see morning sickness as somewhat of a twisted blessing. To me, it means the baby is healthy. So, I’m here to tell you all that Baby F will come out weighing about 19 pounds, doing one-handed push-ups, reciting the Gettysburg Address.

I’m sick. I can’t go near my kitchen, because everything smells weird. I can’t change certain diapers. I can’t get too close to the dogs. And I’ve spent more time with the toilet today than with any one of my kids.

Yup, Baby F will be one healthy baby. He or she will probably not every be named, but at least he or she will be healthy.

  1. Michelle Said,

Have you tried ginger? Not cheapo ginger ale that really barely has any ginger at all, but real ginger? I’ve used it in capsules, as tea and crystallized/candied. It works well! You can also buy spendier *real* ginger ale in some stores, often in the natural foods section. Hope that helps!

  2. Proverbs31 Said,

With each of my babies it was different. With the first one, I sipped Dr. Pepper (from a fountain, not a can, it really does make a difference) and nibbled on Ritz while I drank it. It worked. For that one I could not tolerate the smell of meat AT ALL. I smelled the meat counter the second I walked in the grocery store. Hubby took over cooking the meat part of our meals while I laid down.
With number two the only thing that really worked were those REALLY big dill pickles. I slowly nibbled on it over a couple of hours. I also ate popcorn chicken like it was going out of style. It was the only “real food” that stayed down. Still couldn’t tolerate raw meat, or even cooked ground beef for that matter.
And for number three (boy after two girls) ground beef was all I could eat. Go figure. I had a plain cheeseburger (mustard, meat, and cheese) from DQ nearly everyday. Hubby would bring them home to me. I also noticed that milk was making me more nauseous so I switched to soymilk for that pregnancy.

My philosophy was find something that stayed down - and eat THAT. A LOT. =)

I’ve also had friends that swore by ginger or peppermint but I don’t like those so I didn’t even try them. :) Hope you find something that works!

  3. Cheryl Said,

The only thing that worked for me was “Sea Bands” They are bracelets that hold accupressure on the underside of your wrist. Available at CVS or Walgreens, etc. $10. The best $10 I have ever spent. Good luck.
PS I came from WFMW, Rocks in My Dryer :)

  4. Amanda Said,

I feel your pain. I had horrible morning sickness (actually it was night sickness). I have since read that vinegar will help. I didn’t read this until after I delivered but I would have tried anything. I can’t rememember now why it was supposed to work but it was related to the pickle craving. The real ginger ale seemed to help me a bit. I also tried those preggy pops and the sea bands they didn’t offer me relief but that have both worked for friends,

  5. Auntie Heather Said,

I wish I had a fabulous idea, but with Bear I tried all of the above remedies and then some and was still sick as a dog (hopefully, Wrigley isn’t offended when I say that). Basically, just tried plugging my nose and ended up throwing up a lot. The smell of my sewing machine made me vomit, as did fresh air. So, all I can say is that I pray for you often and am so proud of you I can hardly express it.

    Love ya.

  6. Toni Said,

I have a friend just coming out of her first trimester that recommended B-6 and accupuncture. She said neither cured it completely but at least made it bearable. I’ve seen a product called Morning Sickness Magic in a couple of places now. It has B-6. Good Luck!

ps - I came by way of Rocks in My Dryer.

  7. Susanna Said,

I was very sick with Daniel- way past the ‘12 week’ marker. Before him I was pregnant but not sick….and similarly to you, lost my first child before 12 weeks. Have been sick this time but not as badly. Not being exhausted really helped (easy for me to say with only one other child) I was working full time first time around. I used to suck little lolly pops and eat salt and vinegar crisps (very healthy I know!) None of the ‘traditional fixes’ seemed to work for me.This time marmite on toast seemedto help. I have heard that accupuncture helps though…..if you like needles! I remember not being able to get my hair cut because I didn’t dare go and sit in the hairdressers….I would have thrown up.
